Our “Foodie” Story

Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in NYC, Elsa, an Afro-Latina, learned the love of cooking from her mom. Watching her family and friends gather around, socializing and relishing her delicious home cooking, planted the seed to open a Caribbean restaurant featuring authentic Dominican food in Houston. Although she initially pursued a career in Finance, her passion for cooking for others ultimately won out.

After moving to Houston, Elsa met Jeff, a native Houstonian and fantastic cook. Through him, she discovered a passion for Soul Food and learned to lovingly prepare many Southern dishes. Jeff grew up enjoying his grandmother’s delicious home-cooked Sunday meals after church, instilling in him a deep love for all things Soul Food. His fried chicken recipe is like no other! Along with his culinary talent, Jeff is an entrepreneur at heart with a keen sense for business.

In 2019, recognizing the need for a unique culinary experience, Jeff and Elsa—true foodies at heart—decided it was time to introduce a distinct type of cuisine to the Houston area. They launched their Comfort Foodies food truck in 2020, just prior to the pandemic. Despite the adversities, the success of the food truck and their Soul food corporate catering business kept customers calling for more, motivating them to open their first brick-and-mortar establishment.

At Comfort Foodies, Jeff and Elsa have blended Caribbean and Southern flavors to create a new and exciting culinary experience. Their goal is to create an inviting environment for families and friends to enjoy a home-cooked, flavorful meal, whether inside the restaurant or on the patio, especially during brunch.

Their dedication to cooking for others is matched by their commitment to the community, and they eagerly seek partnerships with local non-profit organizations. Comfort Foodies also specializes in beautifully presented catering buffets for all types of special occasions, including brunches, corporate events, baby or wedding showers, birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and holiday parties.
